The VGT solenoid, sometimes also called the VGT actuator, is a critical component of the variable geometry system. It adjusts or holds the position of the vanes in the turbine housing by metering the flow of engine oil into and out of the VGT piston/plunger. The valve position is controlled by switching the voltage source inside of the powertrain control module (PCM). A failed solenoid defaults to the open position, making it difficult to build boost.
